Burmese in Unicode — not mixed Zawgyi that turns into boxes.

About the language

Burmese at a glance

Burmese is the national language of Myanmar. We were one of the first US networks to staff Burmese interpreters at scale for refugee resettlement — and we cover ethnic-minority languages spoken inside Myanmar too.

Burmese uses its own rounded script, traditionally written without spaces between words. Font encoding is a real production issue: the legacy Zawgyi encoding still circulates alongside standard Unicode, and mixing the two produces garbled text on screen.

Burmese has around 33 million speakers, mostly in Myanmar and the global diaspora. We cover the varieties listed here and can match a linguist to a specific region or community on request.
